What is this procedure?

Breast lift is a surgical procedure that involves the reshaping of the breast. It is an option for women who, though happy with the size of their breasts, are unhappy about shape, sagging and loss of firmness. Factors such as pregnancy, weight loss, ageing and losing skin elasticity can affect the shape and firmness of the breasts. This procedure is also called Mastopexy, in which excess skin is removed, and the breast tissue and nipple are reshaped and repositioned.

In this procedure, as the breast is reshaped, a small amount of breast tissue may need to be removed; however, this may lead to a noticeable cup size difference in some patients. In most breast lift procedures, the nipples and areolas (dark skin around the nipple) stay attached to their blood and nerve supply while they are repositioned. However, in rare cases where the breasts are extremely droopy, the nipples and areola may be repositioned as a nipple graft.

The scars are positioned so they are as hidden as possible, even if low cut clothing is worn. The resultant scars will be red initially and will take six months to one year to fade. During this period, scar management is mandatory. There are generally 3 degrees of sagging which are classified as mild, moderate and severe. These classifications are determined by the position of the nipple in relation to the fold underneath the breast.
